5300ce, 1.1GB hard drive, 64MB RAM, OS8 (fresh install on an initialized HD)
When I started it up the first time, it was in 256 color mode. I tried switching to the thousands mode via the control strip, but when I did that the screen went light gray and then a little darker. Restarting does the same thing - I see the mouse pointer, then the welcome to Mac OS screen, and then a blank screen. If I start up with extensions off, I get a checkerboard pattern. I noticed after staring at it for a while that the pattern changes during the startup process. Then I realized that it's the display magnified a lot. So much so that the mouse pointer is about half of the screen, and the Apple menu icon is about the same size. I can actually select the menu, but of course I can't read anything that I scroll to. If I try resetting the PRAM at startup, the machine just goes into GLOD mode.
So I unplugged everything (battery and power supply) and held in the reset button for thirty seconds. When I do that, it will start up but only with extensions off.
One of the suggestions I got earlier was to start up with a disk and then change the monitor to 256 colors, but I guess it's been too long for me in OSX and I don't see that setting in the control panels. I only remember it being on the control strip, which of course doesn't work when starting up with extensions off.
Any advice or suggestion will be gladly attempted, thanks.
And Drew, I was so inspired by your redbook I painted mine blue.
