Some time ago, I posted a request for ideas about 3 PB 3400 motherboards that all had the same problems:

Each board would boot chime, but stop at the flashing question mark disk. The cursor would not move, either from external mouse or trackpad. It would not boot from internal CD, external CD or internal HD. It would boot from a floppy, but the cursor was frozen. I could zap the PRAM, but not get into OF.

Talking with Tim Seufert about some PB 3500 problems I have having led me to inspect each one of the 3400 motherboards I had. Lo and behold, Q18 (an 8 pin FET on the back of the motherboard) was blown on each board, and obviously so in hindsight.

After replacing Q18 from a scrap 5300 board, each one of the three mobos now works fine.

So, if anyone has similar problems, take a close look at Q18 on the motherboard.

On a similar note, I have 2 3400 com boards that are marked "bad". After inspection I found that each board had a blown fuse F1 (the only fuse I could ever find on any part of a 3400). There are no markings to indicate what amp rating the fuse is, nor is the fuse marked. Does anyone know what amp rating I should use as a replacement ?

thanks,

Mad Dog
