These seem to be two different issues, neither of which is related to your very, very 
long quote of the other posts, complete with all trailers.

You did not mention the model of your "Palm Pilot."  If it is one of the original old 
Palm III, V, or VII models, which "wants to use the modem or printer port," there were 
Macintosh adapters for "hotsync" connection to the serial port on a PowerBook 3400c.  
In that case it is no longer a USB problem.

If you must use the USB card reader, for uploading images from your SmartMedia memory 
card, then you are into the CardBus issue, which has been discussed numerous times on 
this List, including several recent threads, which can be found by searching the List 
Archives.  However, there are inexpensive non-CardBus PCMCIA card adapters for reading 
common memory cards (CompactFlash, SmartMedia, etc.)  LiveWarehouse.com comes to mind 
as a vender for such adapters.
