If it is one of the original old Palm III, V, or VII models, which "wants to use the modem or printer port," there were Macintosh adapters for "hotsync" connection to the serial port on a PowerBook 3400c. In that case it is no longer a USB problem. If you must use the USB card reader, for uploading images from your SmartMedia memory card, then you are into the CardBus issue, which has been discussed numerous times on this List, including several recent threads, which can be found by searching the List Archives.
