I know that some places are required to remove serial# information when they 
discard product or remove it from company asset lists. 

I'm told it's a legal/tax scenario, though I'm clueless as to the logic of 
it. But then again, it can be difficult to use logic, taxes, and government in 
the same sentence anyway, so that may be a mute point. : )
