Here's the new problem. I can't get the ethernet working on my 3400c. I've got it hooked into my switch, and I can select ethernet in TCP/IP without problems.
When I try to select ethernet in AppleTalk, I get an error and it returns to the previous setting. However, I do see the link light turn on on the switch for several seconds while the PowerBook thinks about something.
Similarly, when I try to get an IP (using DHCP), the link light turns on for several seconds, then turns off. TCP/IP doesn't get an IP (and whatever IP-based app I'm using reports an error).
None of the error messages are descriptive...
I did a clean install of OS 8.5 (and updated to 8.6) onto a PC Card on my Wallstreet, and I'm using that to boot my 3400c (which has no internal hard drive, floppy, or CD-ROM drive). Could it be that a necessary component didn't get installed when I did that (is the installer really that smart? Somehow I doubt it)?
(It's not the cable or switch, BTW - I've eliminated them from the fishbone)
Any ideas on this one?
Many thanks! Drew --
