OS 9.x can run File Sharing via TCP/IP thanks to the inclusion of Apple-branded 3rd party software (OpenDoor Networks' ShareWay IP Personal). OS 8.6 cannot.

Most non-Apple wireless access points will route AppleTalk packets on the wired section of the network only. Wireless clients will not have access to your AppleTalk (not TCP/IP) File Sharing "servers."

Since your 3400c is running 8.6, it's shared volumes will not be available to your iBook. Because your iBook is running OS 9.x with File Sharing over TCP/IP, it _IS_ visible to your 3400c.

Solution: Hook your iBook up to your wired network when you need to access your 3400c's hard drive, upgrade your 3400c to 9.x, or find yourself a copy of ShareWay IP Personal. ShareWay IP Personal runs great on just about every PowerPC Mac, and I believe it only requires System 7.5 and OpenTransport (though I could be wrong), so it should work just fine on your 3400c. You'll save yourself lots of trouble, however, if browsing your 3400c's hard drive from your iBook is not a requirement.

Peace,
Drew
