Bill, Actually, this is easier than I remember for OS 9. Find your program Disk Copy. Open it. Insert your disk. It should ask you what you want to do with it. Make sure mount image is selected and click okay.
It should image the disk and then you just change the name to make sure it says exactlly the same as the disk. I think I also copied the entire disk once and cut and paste the icon over to the file and renamed it to match the disk. That worked for me once. Hopefully one of these will work for you.
