Hi I think that what might of happened is someone has just made a disc copy of a working system they had and transferred it to the 3400 either via cd or appletalk serial , and the system they made it from never had ethernet, possibly a 1400 or 5300. disc image.

that could explain the lack of ethernet in the system profiler

i would suggest a complete erase and install of the system.
also if that does not work i have a complete 3400 in parts minus the 128mb ram card i sold that you could use to test the various bits.

Bill,
After responding to our off list correspondence.
I shockingly and with embarasement realized that I can
plug in a RJ-45 jack in the back of the 3400.
But, I coudn't find an "internal ethernet" option
in TCP/IP or appletalk control panels.
So I looked in Apple Profile and find no internal ethernet card installed.
