 Hi ACFX44501,

Sounds like a nice town, and I guess that I should shop around.

Where is your town, and how do you access the internet in those free cafes?

Roger said that in Starbucks when you open your powerbook it asks if you
want to join the Starbucks Network. Do the free cafes have something similar?

Take care.

I've been reading too much e-mail. Most of my mailing list mail is either about Macs or Railroads. I looked at this message and it seemed like they had completely crossed. ACFX is a railroad reporting mark for American Car and Foundry Leasing (X for Leasing). So ACFX44501 sounds like a railroad car. That and the previous messages I just read were from a railroad group including a message from a Roger.

Anyway

One day while waiting for some railfan friends I went into a Burger King and noticed they had free wireless access. So I grabbed the laptop and checked it out. You start by going to any web page. A web page comes up for Internet access. You had to create a user ID and password. It's then supposed to send you an e-mail to confirm. They do this to limit abuse. First problem, the web page never went past this point. Second problem, you can't check your e-mail to confirm your access until you connect elsewhere so it's kind of hard to use the first time. So I went on line with my cell phone and there is the confirmation e-mail. So I used that and was able to get "access". Problem three, I could only access the website for this service. Overall I was not impressed.

I have heard of similar services though that do use some sort of login using a web page like the above.

I've also used wireless access at a couple of doctor's offices lately and in that case it was simply a matter of joining that network.

Hi Clark,

Thank you for your reply, and you found a good fix around Burger King's Catch 22 web access. I started to think about Franz Kafka.

Being a Railfan, there are a couple of Yahoo Groups that you might be interested in, or know about. They are the "monorailsociety" and "UrbanMaglev".
Lots of interesting information about moving people, and the leading edge of rail and rail-less transportation.
The Monorail Society has an interesting web site: http://www.monorails.org/

Take care.
