Granted that the Kanga, et. al., have a "zoom video" PCMCIA slot, which is apparently compatible with that same slot on the Wallstreet, that same slot where the Wallstreet's DVD decoder card is inserted.
Granted that the Kanga, et. al., do not have a DVD drive available for them. Granted that the correct DVD player software for 9.0, 9.1, and, indeed, for 9.2.1, is 1.3, and that the required files are available from any of the above distributions using TomeViewer. Now, it has been proved that a 7300 can be made to play DVDs, using an EIDE/UATA DVD drive with an ACARD SCSIDE "Bridge" to convert that drive to SCSI, and with Intech's CD SpeedTools being used to access the DVD, and also to playback the audio through the SCSI bus. This, using Apple DVD Player 2.7 and a Radeon 7000 video card with its integral DVD decoder. The challenge, then, has been to see if there is some combination of hardware and software which would somewhat similarly allow the Kanga, et. al., to play DVDs. A Kanga was configured with an external SCSI drive, an EIDE/UATA DVD drive converted as described above. The Apple DVD Player 1.3 software was installed on a clean install of Mac OS 9.0. A Wallstreet DVD decoder card was inserted into the Kanga. The decoder card was recognized. A DVD was inserted into the drive. The DVD would be recognized as such, but would not launch the Apple DVD Player. Launching the Apple DVD Player application manually resulted in a "missing hardware" warning, followed by an orderly application termination. An experiment with Apple DVD Plater 2.7, which is a software only player, resulted in a warning relating to conflicts in the Kanga's screen resolution, if the display was the internal LCD, and a warning relating to missing hardware if the display was an external CRT.
