John: I agree with Yersinia: First get comfortable with 7.5.3/7.5.5 and see if you need an upgrade at all. Dealing with these 'legacy' powerbooks (terrible name, by the way) you admit in advance that you don't care to be 'fully up to date'. (Those guys with Panther live in the illusion that they are up to date, but in fact, they are always behind, too.)

Well, up to date, even if illusory, is nice :-). And it would be nice not to be so far behind. The latest Acrobat Reader I can run appears to be 3.0; the latest Netscape 3.5. Everything is far behind the industry. And these are not illusory lags: Reader 2.0.1 wouldn't display the PB 190 manual that's cleanly opened in 5.2 on my linux box. It's well known that you need Netscape 4.7 and higher just to get basic html 4.0 rendering and current javascript interpretation.

For easy networking, you still need some little upgrade, though: Open Transport 1.1.1
Before installing this version, you first have to activate Open Transport 1.1, which has probably been installed with 7.5.3.

I downloaded OT 1.1.1 and 1.1.2, but I can't seem to get to it in my menus until I have an ethernet card. The TCP/IP control panel refuses to let me do anything but AppleTalk.

Can someone tell me what's the difference between 7.5.3 and 7.5.5? I mean in terms of: why upgrade? Maybe OT 1.1.1 is included there?

I think the very confusing verbage on the Apple website says 1.1.1 is part of the 7.5.5 upgrade, but I downloaded it just in case. 1.1 is part of 7.5.3. You definitely have to install 1.1.2 after you have 7.5.5.
