Perhaps the most vulnerable portion of a hard drive is the first physical 
track or tracks.

The partition map is stored there.

I believe a backup is stored at the very end of the drive and from this 
backup map the data in the primary map can be restored.

However, there are operations which depend upon the first track or tracks 
being absolutely error-free.

Should a permanent defect be found there, one which cannot be "spared" 
using an alternate track mechanism implemented entirely in HD hardware, 
then the drive is unusable.
