No help on that here, Adrian, sorry, my top machine is a 3400C (which I got 
at a better price than the 1400 - a friend gave it to me because it wouldn't 
power up. Turned out it had a bad power supply, nothing more). So I'm afraid 
I don't know much about the Pismo.

I can't consider it a highjack if the subject line is changed. Which is a 
netiquete I wish all listers including myself adhered to more .  

I sympathize on the 1400 having one myself. Nice machine and still highly 
useful I would just like to play DVDs for my studies. So am looking to move up 
to a Pismo.

But I am persuaded at least that a fixer upper as a core to start is desirable. 
It's just having a working machine to test on that I balk at because of cost. 
Which is the whole key to the method of building from parts to begin with.
