If the new modem from earthlink has a private IP then i really tend to say that it is allready a router and not only a modem. Probably everything would be fine if you just plug in a hub or switch and plug your Macs into the hub/switch. In this case the SMC is not needed or even not usable here. Most modern routers have the posibillity to configure the MTU. If not, sometimes the problem are the older ethernet cards in Macs, you still have to use the IPNettuner. > I did a little research and decided on an SMC router.
