If this question is off-topic, perhaps someone can direct me to a group that's appropriate. It involves the wired networking of my 3 computers, one of which is a PB 1400.

Which OS in the PB?

When I first got ADSL, Earthlink required the use of MacPoet, software which seemingly conflicted with most of what I was using.

(your comment below "this new modem does not require MacPoet") It is the ISP (Earthlink) that requires the use of PPPoE (PPP Over Ethernet) for authentication and accounting, not your modem. This is the xDSL equivalent of PPP over dial-up; your standard tcp/ip packets are encapsulated within it.

Before you installed the router, it was implemented in your Mac by use of the MacPOET software. Nasty buggy software :(.

A router eliminated the need for MacPoet and also allowed me to connect my Macs with ethernet and also provided a print server so that I could share my postscript Laserprinter.

It eliminated the need for MacPOET, because it was doing the PPPoE end-point for you.

So, I was forced into my first "adventure" in networking with an Asante 3004LC router that didn't connect me to the internet until I bought software (IPNetTuner) that changed the MTU (I think that's maximum throughput). Asante blamed it on Earthlink, but anyhow the software cost me almost as much as the router. But, it worked pretty well for 2-3 years.

Changing the MTU (Max Transmission Unit - essentially a packet sizing thing) should not have been necessary. Having to do so is an indication of a setup problem in that Asante router.

What did before was create this:

xdsl <-> old modem <-> PPPoE (in old router) NAT <-> pure ethernet <-> Macs.

So far so good.

The next problem was the modem provided by Earthlink died, so less than a year ago we bought a new one from Earthlink--a Netopia. This new modem does not require MacPoet, but now I have three computers and would like to have the same set up as before.

I did a little research and decided on an SMC router. Last night I attempted to set up the system and of course, the router can't find the modem. The SMC tech said it was because the modem has a private IP address and said to contact Earthlink and find out how to change the modem to Bridge Mode so that the IP address would become public. I did this and still no dice.

Now it sounds like the new modem has a router built in? Exactly what model Netopia modem is it? Exactly what model SMC router did you buy?

What you have now, I think, is:

xdsl <-> PPPoE (netopia modem/router) NAT <-> (SMC router) NAT <-> Macs

IOW, you're trying to NAT your NAT. :) A bit too natty to work.

+/- the models involved, you need to put that Netopia box in bridge mode (disable it's NAT) *or* eliminate the SMC router. Once I know what model Netopia you have, we can check to see what'all it supports...

Any suggestions would be appreciated. BTW, should I still need to use IPNetTuner to change the MTU? Any security issues in using Bridge Mode?

If things are set up correctly (One NAT only!), you shouldn't need IPNT. OTOH, IPNT does a good job of tuning the older Apple IP stacks. So since you gots it, you might as well use it.

Bridge Mode just turns off the NAT functions in the modem. That lets you do the NAT functions (and ip-filter firewalling) in the SMC router.

- Dan.
