Hi everyone,

What exactly is meant by "classic" ?

I've seen both software and hardware that has stated compatible with Mac
Classic.

Classic, strictly speaking, means the Mac OS 9 environment in OS X, but usage is slipping to mean any Mac OS before OS X.

Also with Mac OS #.X.X so does this mean if a machine is loaded with say..8.0 then it could be upgraded to 8.1 then up and up from there or at least
until reaching the limits of the machine.

Not necessarily. There are upgrades and updates.

System 7.5.5 is available free from Apple on their web site.

Systems 7.6, 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0 were paid upgrades, meaning you have to buy them to get to that level. In between versions were free updates 8.1, 8.6, 9.1, 9.2, etc.

To apply an upDATE, like 8.6, you need some version of the immediately preceding upGRADE, 8.5 to be installed.

An upGRADE can be applied to any Mac supported by that version without regard to any earlier OS on the system.

With OS X this has been simplified considerably.

Each major point release: 10.0, 10.1*, 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 are paid upgrades.

Each minor point release: 10.2.1, 10.2.2, 10.2.6, etc are updates for that major point release.

*10.1, wasn't a 'paid' upgrade, but that's largely because 10.0 was essentially an unusable alpha release of the OS and Apple's customers would have burned 1 Infinite Loop to the ground had they made us pay for it. They did charge $20 for the CD, but it was soon downloadable.

10.2 was the first truly ready-for-prime-time release of OS X.
