Onset of whining is often a sign that the spindle motor bearings are starting to wear out. They're sealed with "lifetime lubrication" at the factory. By this they mean that life ends when the lubrication wears out.

Over time, the bearing friction will increase to the point where the drive runs very hot, or where the motor torque just can't maintain the proper speed.

That said, I've run noisy drives for a very long time, so they can apparently run for months or years, happily if noisily. Still, you may wish to increase the frequency with which you make backups, just in case. :)

I noticed it about a month after I got the computer (in March). I've
used other PowerBook 500s before and they didn't make that noise as
far as I know.
