I've seen them last for a year or more when they're like that. I've also seen them die within weeks. Just no way to tell what kind of condition the drive's bearings are in.

If you've enjoying the machine, regardless of what it cost you, why not get a new drive and consider the additional cost an investment in a hobby? I don't want to tell you what I put in my 5300 before it finally died, considering how little I originally got the machine for. And yes, it was worth it. :)
