The problem is that it won't even precharge the batteries. Smart probe
won't recognize them.
I've had a couple of batteries which weren't seen because of broken
plastic across the connectors of the battery, so you mcould check this.
This isn't the problem either.
I got two PB540s and 4 batteries a coupe of years ago. The batteries
were all dead and none of the battery utilities I tried would help.
I set up a little gadget to charge the batteries from a bench supply.
I brought a couple of them up to around 12V and stuck them in the
laptop. It did it's thing and the batteries do show up. The other
two never did show up in the computer. The two "good" batteries are
good for maybe 10 minutes. I think of them as UPS power. The two
dead batteries I use for ballast.
So my points are you can try charging them externally if you got the
right gear and that if you do it may not help much.
Most of the Apple laptop batteries I've tried this on have a "+" and
"-" on the terminals that connect to the battery.
