I have the same problem..... However I did notice if I put the 1400 to sleep
as opposed to it going in to sleep by itself (especially on battery power),
it will wake up without problem.
For the last 2 weeks it was fine, then today I got the checker-board when
waking from sleep.

Hmmmmm kinda odd..

You are "stepping on" the system heap when you restart, which causes the
system to crash. This is common with PowerBooks. They use a lot of
"real" memory when they wake up. Both my 3400c's and my 1400c do this.
This was, also, pretty common with older Macs that had smaller amounts
of RAM. I am unaware of a specific "fix" for this in 1400's. Putting
more RAM in the machine would help, but the max RAM of the 1400 really
isn't high enough, in my experience, to entirely eliminate this.

I never shut off my 1400, ever. But, I never put it to sleep running
more than one small app and I am running an absolute basic system with
very few extensions, (8.6). That has, effectively, eliminated the
crashing on wake up with it. Not really practical if you use it for
anything. I do shut off my 3400c's, but when I do put them to sleep,
they frequently crash...
