I use mine for that, telnetting in to my ISP, IRC chatting and even light web-browsing. It's also still good for word processing (and I ftp the material to my directory on the ISP for transfer).
Is there a list of cards that will work??? Only the Orinoco Silver?
I can't remember the chip it used, but I had good luck with the Proxim Skyline card.
