MCE made a third-party Combo DVD-ROM and CD-ROM-R=R/W for the Lombard.
The concept of a Super drive had not been envisioned ... then.

The Lombard ... and the nearly identical Pismo ... is not a particularly
good platform for DVD burning, as has been discussed previously in this
List.

IIRC, no one ever made an internal DVD burner for the Lombard (or for the
Pismo, either).

Either the Apple or the MCE media bay can accommodate an industry
standard 12.7mm Super drive, and, indeed, one which supports +/-, CD,
DVD, ROM-R-R/W, and even dual-layer.

Installation is a five-minute job, insofar as the hardware itself is
concerned.

Installation may take longer, insofar as the software is concerned, with
PatchBurn being required on systems earlier than 10.4, and, indeed, even
on 10.4 for a very few drives.

(No software installation is required for very simple operations, such as
for booting, for data reading, or, in most cases, for DVD playing.
However, not all capabilities will be enabled for every case, beyond
those simple cases just mentioned).

DVD burning in the media bay is reliable at 2X; is almost always reliable
at 4X; and is most likely always unreliable at above 4X.

(The very same drive in a desktop equipped with an 80-wire/40-pin cable,
or in an external Firewire or USB case, or in an external Combo
Firewire/USB case, is almost always reliable at the maximum speed the
drive will support, even if the application itself is unaware of that
maximum speed and simply states that "Best" speed will be used if not
otherwise specified).
