Hi Kenneth,

Thanks for the help. Here is what I know/see:

- I have never setup a pcmcia ethernet card in this machine, as I could not find drivers for either the Linksys or Belkin cards that I have. I did setup a Linksys 56k modem however.

- I do not have an "Alternate Ethernet" connection option in my Appletalk Control Panel. All I have are: Ethernet, IRTalk, Modem/Printer, and Remote Only.

- When I choose "Use DHCP Sever" in my TCP/IP settings for "Ethernet", I do not have the option to specify a DNS server. All I have is a box that says "Search Domains" in which I could put an entry. I've been assuming that means something like "earthink.net", or "globexplorer.com", but am not sure.

- Finding the WaveLan Version 6.00.4 driver wasn't easy, and it was the only one I ran across. Do you know where I could find a v6.3 one?

- I would love to update the OS on this machine to 8.6, as I believe that I could use the 7.2 Orinoco driver with that OS. However, as lame as it sounds, I haven't been able to find an 8.5 install CD locally, and as I understand it, I need to load that first and then install 8.6 over it. If I'm wrong there, please clarify. I don't know the Mac OS extremely well, and I don't really know what to buy from the descriptions I see on eBay. Alot of the CD's seem to imply that they are restore CD's for specific types of machines.

- Thanks for the info on what to do with the hex values in the wi-fi settings. I had no clue there.

Regards,

Roger

I have set my Appletalk control panel to Connect Via: "Ethernet", and
the TCP/IP control panel to Connect Via: "Ethernet" as well. Aside from
that, I'm not really sure what to do next. My IT staff at work has the
following type of info listed on our support page:

Hi Roger. I have never set up the Orinoco software under OS 8.1 but lets
give this a try.

First off, have you ever installed a PCMCIA ethernet card? If so, then that
software for that card will keep the wireless card from working. To fix
that problem you will need to do a clean install of the OS. See my FAQ page
for more info on this.

If you have not installed a ethernet card, lets see if this will help.
First select the AppleTalk Control Panel and select Alternate Ethernet. You
do not have to turn on AppleTalk, just point it to the Alternate Ethernet.

In the TCP/IP Control Panel, Seclct Connect Via: Alternate Ethernet,
Configure: Using DHCP Server. Then make sure you have Name Server Address
listed. You can use 207.217.120.83, 207.217.77.82, 207.217.126.81. These
are for Earthlink. Your IT Adminstrator may have given you other numbers,
if so, use them.

When you want to set up the WEP Pasphrase, enter the Hexadecimal value in
the WaveLan software, with a $ (Dollar) sign in front of the Hex value. Use
the first HEX value your IT admin gave you.

Make sure you set the channel on your card, to the same channel you want to
connect to.

You may want to try to update your WaveLan software with v6.3, which ads a
control panel to assist you in setting up a connection. This control pannel
should let you see the signal you are trying to connect to.

As for testing your card, it would help if you could go to some public
wireless area, and see if you can connect to their signal with out WEP. If
a friend has a laptop with wireless, he could set up a computer to computer
connection (called Ad Hock) and you could try to connect.

You need to make sure the card and software package are working before you
work on the WEP.

As I said before, the Orinoco software seems to work better under OS 8.6. I
am sure others on this list have made it work under OS 8.1.

I hope this helps.
