... it could be that most notebooks have inadequate cooling of that area. However, from my limited experience, cooling under the 'Book won't do anything to help, because of how the PC card cage is designed.
I think you pretty much hit it on the head. Laptops tend to have very poor cooling. Putting a metal object in a slot usually located pretty close to the CPU causes the metal casing on the card to heat up rather quickly.
That's pretty normal. I've noticed very warm-to-the-touch cards in my 5300, 3400, Wallstreet, Pismo, and PC laptop.
