Subject: 3400c Li-Ion Battery?
I have one that seemed to have discharged itself and
now won't charge. All 4 green lights come on however.
Is it a gonner or is there a chance to save it?
Wouldn't charge in a dual charger either. It tries to
charge but seems to give up after about 10 seconds.
Same thing happens in the Powerbook.
Thanks
Li-Ions give you very few options. They can develop a "digital memory"
if you have rarely let the battery run down. The fuel gauge computation
needs to be updated as the battery ages, but if you've mainly kept the
PB on the charger, then the updating hasn't happened. A few complete
charge/discharge cycles will fix that, if that is indeed the problem.
Re-celling is hard to do. Because it's dangerous, you can't buy loose
cells on the open market. If you do find some, just be careful. Don't
solder to them (spot weld the battery connections), or you're risking
"rapid uncontrolled disassembly." This is *not* an operation for the
casual hacker.
As for shelf life, Li-Ion batteries are famous for eating themselves
whether they're in use or not. So stocking up on a lot of them is likely
to lead to some disappointment down the road. To maximize shelf life,
most manufacturers recommend charging to a level of about 40%. If too
high, self-eating occurs. If too low, ordinary self discharge may take
the cells down to the point where another protective circuit kicks in
and prevents charging altogether.
Good luck, and be very careful!
