It's really hard to say what the original fault was without being able to examine all the hardware. Try scraping out all the carbon and then scrape out some plastic too, just to make sure you get everything. After cleaning away any residue then try measuring the contacts with with an ohmmeter, with no power connected to the laptop. Measure it then reverse the leads and measure it again. The higher value should be well above 100 ohms although that is largely guess work on my part. Then try it and see.

Only very badly designed capacitors will whine, if then. Generall whining is from inductors. Burning components typically produce more of a hissing sound than a whine. Although the whine could be symptomatic of an overload.
