Can anybody recommend a site to go to tear apart a powerbook 5300?
I got one at flea market the other day and all I can get are the death chimes.

Thanks, bob

The first thing you should check is that the RAM is fully seated. If it is, try pulling the RAM card totally. You might not be able to do anything with the PowerBook (on-board RAM is only 8 or 16 MB, and that's not much for the OS & apps), but it should start up fine.

If you STILL get the chimes of death, pull out any PDS card that might be installed.

If you STILL get the chimes of death, there is pretty much nothing else you can do without using a soldering iron.

RAM can be accessed from right beneath the keyboard. You'll need to unscrew three Torx-8 screws on the bottom of the PowerBook. (You can buy a T-8 screw driver from Sears.) Unscrew the screws, turn over the PowerBook, and gently lift the keyboard up at the front edge. Pull it towards you about 1/2" and rotate it 180 degrees so that the keys are now face down on the palm rest. The RAM card is on the left side.

PDS cards are somewhat harder to access. It's probably best to try re-seating/removing the RAM card first.

Good luck!
