Don't know if this bears on the problem or not, but Netscape 3.x.x seems to suffer from electronic Alzheimer's occasionally. The cure for it was to go to "Mail and Newsgroup Preferences" select "Identity" and click the box that says: "Use Internet Config" and then try to sign on. It always worked. After signing on a couple of times, the box can be unchecked and sign-on worked normally.
