I also had a heck of a time when I tried (and finally succeeded) to install
a Maxtor 40 Gig IDE HD on my friend's PB 200. It turns out there are 2
THINGS YOU HAVE TO DO or nothing will work. First, you must update the SCSI
Manager. There is an application called SCSI manager Update (If you can't
find this online, I can send it to you if you contact me offline. However,
it is 1 Meg so it would be better to download it from someplace.) The reason
no device will boot is because the latest SCSI Manager must be on your
alternate boot device (CD, ZIP, etc.) if Mac OS doesn't find it on your boot
IDE drive. Second, both PB 180 and PB 200 require the 6360/6400/5400 Update
(this should be readily available on Apple's web site) or your computer will
boot to a gray screen (at least this will happen for sure when a UMAX
scanner is attached). One more less critical tidbit I found is that if you
use SilverLining LT, you must update to ver 2.2.2, not 2.2.1 or earlier.
