I got the Linksys router to use with my Sprint broadband connection in
part due to
some glowing endorsements I received after posing a question here. I
have to say
that setup was easy and the router does have a great list of features.
The router is almost setup out of the box. After you use your browser to
connect
to 192.168.1.1, (and put in the admin password), I recommend you change
that
password if you haven't already. While I have Sprint and you are using
@home, they
will be similar. I received a fixed IP from Sprint and I put that in as
my address
for the router. You must also enter the subnet mask (255.255.255.0), the
gateway
(provided by @home) and DNS information. Then, the easiest thing to do
is turn on
DHCP on the router and then go to the TCP/IP control panel and change
the Ethernet
setting to "Use DHCP". It's probably currently set as "Configure
Manually". If you
do that, then all you have to do is save the settings in the control
panel and you
are set.
A cool thing about the Linksys is that it defaults to assigning IP
addresses from
100-199, so you can actually use both DHCP and fixed addresses. If you
want to
setup one of your or more of your Macs/PCs with a fixed address, you can
assign
them IP addresses in the 2-99 range. In this case, you need to setup the
TCP/IP
control panel to "Configure Manually", and you must supply the IP
address, subnet
mask, gateway (which would be 192.168.1.1) and the DNS servers supplied
to you by
@home. Putting in the DNS info is *important*, as you won't be able to
connnect
without it when you use a fixed IP address. When you use DHCP, this is
all handled
for you, and the usual error is to forget to set the TCP/IP control
panel to use
DHCP.
Hope that helps.
