Can't answer, but I "get it" now. All of the Macs and 
clones based on this mobo design must have RAM in a 
certain place in order to boot. The Apples just had it 
soldered to the board, whereas PowerComputing made 
that same position removeable, giving the option of 
using more than 8MB in the first "position".

That also explains (for me) why Apple System Profiler 
thinks there's RAM on the logic board, not in a DIMM 
slot. As for the memory controller, maybe that means 
you could bravely take a 6360 mobo (or similar) and 
solder a 32MB chip in place of the 8MB already there.
