I think the real key there is the price. In three years, the price
dropped by *two
thirds*, or more than 66%, something extraordinary for Apple on two
fronts: first,
they recognized that the market for high-priced machines was both
limited and
shrinking, thanks in part to a growing disparity between Apple and PC
prices. Second,
because the new price was now at least somewhat "affordable". I mean,
let's get
serious here for a moment: who really could afford a $9000+ computer in
1989? You
could buy decent automobiles for less than that!
