Instant Ford Falcon is more like it...8>)

I remember when rumours started to swirl that Steve 'Churchill' Jobs was
allowed back in the building.
At that time Apple had pissed away their reputation as an innovative
computer manufacturer.
Copland had copped out and Microsoft was terrified of Apple going under and
exposing them to the monopoly breakup scenario
PowerComputing was the raging Tiger of the Mac world, with UMAX and
Motorola rapidly gaining buyer share.

Two years later the whole computer scene had changed.
PowerComputing was swallowed whole (one of the reasons I felt secure with
buying one) and suddenly one could 'build' a Mac from Apple via the web!
iMac reintroduced 'innovative' as an Apple adjective. (as well as
technicolor)
The B&W's brought grace, form and substance to the fore.
Laptops went from clunky to cuddly (although we never did get a chance to see
what PowerComputing had on the drawing board)

While I bemoan the passing of the clone era, I think Jobs has done a pretty
decent
job, so to speak, of justifying with success the drastic steps taken at the
time.

There appears on the scene, every few decades, individuals who swim against
the current
and are proved right by their decisions, however unpopular at the time.
Jobs, more than any other, stayed the course with Apple.
Even after his failure to make NeXT a household name he didn't take the
'safe' path.

Ya gotta admit it takes someone with cojones the size of basketballs to
stare down Motorola.

Insofar as the 66% price drop in three years is concerned, I recently
snagged a PTP
180 for $125...about a 96% price drop in three years (yay for eBay!)
Why didn't Apple just continue dropping the price of the 2Ci until it was
'affordable'
instead of fiddle farting around with the 2Vx.
Computers depreciate in value faster than yer wife's sex drive after the
wedding cakes
been eaten...8>)

Cheers...Michael
