Thank you very much for the informed reply Michael!
The machine had been upgraded with memory by someone else as well (the
16Mb modules) and this is why I couldn't figure out what was up. Some
configurations, different placements within the sockets, made Apple
Profiler still see the memory, but only report 3 out of 4 slots being
used... thanks again for the answer!
