there's the difference..the machine is cycling after a boot process has
been initiated.
In actual fact, the correct way to zap the pram in a post 680x0 Mac ( ie.
flush the ic that stores -potentially corrupted- information such as mouse
speed, date & time, monitor info, etc. is to hold down the Command-option
-P-R (copper) keys at STARTUP. When done on restart, the process is not
fully carried out.

Recently on this list I mentioned that potential fix for a PCP that was
operating erratically and it worked.
It solved the problem on my own PowerCenter with a gray monitor at startup
a long while back.

Since then, I have recommended removal of the cache dimm many times as a
1st step in troubleshooting problems such as you have described.
If it works for you, simply post a notice on the list here entitled

"MICHAEL....YOU'RE A GENIUS!!!"

.....which I can use reopen in future when some advice I give fails....
