Last Spring I decided to keep my PB240 alive and
kicking. I had already upgraded with a P'Logix G3
(runs at 303 mhz) and maxed out the memory. Added
a 9 gig external SCSI LaCie HD, then a Keyspan USB
PCI card. Entire unit, and all periphs (printer,
scanner, ZIP, modem, burner, etc.) running fine. Then...

I purchased a Maxtor 40 gig ATA HD to replace the
OEM 2 gig ATA HD (80% full). I lurked, I
questioned, I researched ...then struck. I did a
simple drag 'n' drop copy of the main HD to an
empty partition on the LaCie external. I replaced
the old HD with the new HD. Booted the system
with my 8.5 CD (I actually have 8.6 installed, but
that was the only CD version). Formatted and
partitioned the new HD with Apple's Drive Setup
from the 8.5 disk and copied over all the stuff
from the backup. Rebooted and ta daa...looked
good, but uh oh. Several random icons in MANY
folders were messed up, sort of trashy looking;
Netscape would not find and use my existing
bookmarks and address book, and my email was lost.
It refused to accept my current "profile" and
would not start without a new profile.

Anyway, I removed Maxtor and reinstalled OEM.
This time, I backed up OEM with Dantz DiskFit
Direct. Reversed the drives again, and restored.
Still didn't work. I'm now back to OEM.

So...what the devil is wrong? Do I need to use
the Drive Setup from 8.6? Do I need to just zero
out the new drive and simply reinstall everything
from scratch? (Ugh!)

Maybe there is a 'net place that will give me
step-by-step directions for this? I feel so confused...
