No need to feel confused. What you have done is copy old addresses to new
locations, and the old addresses are no longer any good. As an example, the
icons contained addresses to applications on your old hard drive, and when
the icons are copied to the new hard drive, they are pointing to areas on
the new hard drive that make no sense.

When you installed the new operating system, new preferences were created
for all your OS settings. The old addresses of your email bookmarks and
address book no longer point to where the actual items are now located.
Netscape has an "import" facility that may work. I have had mixed success
with it.

In general, the usual solution requires more work than you did. When you
install a new OS, usually it is easiest to reinstall all you apps as well,
and merely copy in the data and preferences from your old system and apps.
Most of the preferences are going to be in a folder labelled "Preferences"
in your System Folder, but games and some apps keep data files in their own
folders.

Your currrent situation is not yet clear. If you have the old OS backed up,
you can probably still slavage the prefs from the old OS and copy them into
the prefs of the new OS. If only the applications are backed up, you may be
stuck with reinstalling and rebuilding. Unless the hard drive is so messed
up that you cannot figure out what to do to straighten it out, wiping it
should not be necessary. There are tons of experts on this list who are
willing and able to help you straighten this up.
