Joe,

I'm not familiar with internal PCI modems, but I have had excellent results
from a US Robotics v.90 56k external.

As for drivers, device manufacturers' web sites typically have downloadable
drivers. For older devices, you can try:

http://www.macdrivermuseum.com/

There is even a discussion/resource group for old Mac drivers:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/macdrivers

I don't recall my external modems needing a driver (an extension) per se,
although they often came with third party software for a telcom or fax
utility.
