I have had numerous problems with my CD-ROM driver and/or CD drive which is
a Philips PCA80SC. My owners manual says to remove all CD-ROM Toolkit
control panels and accessories. My list consists of this:

CD-ROM Toolkit Control Panels Folder
CDT Remote Apple Menu
FWB CD-ROM Cach Filexx
FWB CD-ROMToolkit Preferences File Preference File in System Folder
FWB CDT Remote Player Preferences

Also these:

Audio CD Access
Foreign File Access
High Sierra File Access
ISO 9660 File Access

You should be able to find these in:

System Folder
Extensions Folder
Control Panel Folder

If you can't find them any other way you can do a search using the find
command in the finder.
After trashing all these files use your original CD to reinstall the CD-Rom
Software.
Sometimes this will work for me and other times it does not. I haven't quite
figured out why but I think I am getting closer. If this works for you
please let me know. Last time I tried this the CD wouldn't mount so I went
on to do some other things. I was online at the time and initiated a search
and then suddenly my CD mounted. Crazy thing. I don't know if I should just
get a new CD drive or not. I am not too impressed with the CD.
