Another Ozzie here ...

I think you have three main options here, my preferred
one isn't the cheapest, but I believe it is the most
reliable.

1) Buy a second hand Apple ROMmed CD drive, 4X and 8X
ones should be reasonable cheap, although not too easy
to find. Look on eBay and the local classified. Any
Apple SCSI CD drive from 1995 onward is going to be
OK. 2X drives might or might not be able to read
CDRWs. So go for an Apple CD (this is my favourite
option)

2) Use the CD extension from system 7.6 (cheapest)

3) Buy a new copy of CD Toolkit or Intech CD drivers
(do not recall the exact denomination) - This might
give you some extra option you'll probably never need,
like caching, etc ..., but at the end of the day it is
also the most expensive.

Option n.1 is my favourite because that way you gain a
bootable CD drive and one that won't need special
drivers or new drivers when you upgrade OS.
