hi all

I recently installed a powerlogix G3 400 512 card in my PCP 210. I also
traded out two old 32 meg ram modules for two 128 meg modules ($26.97 each
at OWC). All went well to that point. Running mac os 8.6, I was able to run
at 420 mhz with the bus speed set at 60 mhz. I enabled the backside cache at
the default setting and the machine was incredibly quicker than i expected.
The good times end there. I then tried to install a western digital 9 gig
scsi drive. The power computing version of fwb hard drive toolkit would
recognize but not initialize the new drive. I tried using increasingly more
recent versions of mac's hard drive setup. I bought fwb's newest hard drive
toolkit (PE). I also downloaded hdst's drive toolkit from OWC. None would
initialize the drive. Assuming the drive was at fault, OWC sent a
replacement which also would not initialize. In my attempts to eliminate
possible conflicts, I reinstalled the 604e processor. The drive still would
not work. I suspect part of the reason this drive was offered on OWC for
such a cheap price was because of similar experiences to mine. But now the
biggest problem. At this point I decided to cut my losses and keep using the
PCP with the original 2 gig. I removed the 604e and reinstalled the G3. The
machine has not started since then. I checked every connection, replaced the
battery, and even switched back to the old ram. I didn't even get the
startup chime. Needing a mac quickly, I bought a used mac 7600 (which uses
the same upgrade chip and ram). The G3 chip would not work...I guess it is
fried. I expect I will be able to return it for a new one, and I will also
try to return the hard drive (which I suspect is also toast from aborted
low-level formatting attempts). The first time the G3 was installed in the
PCP, the monitoring software reported it running at barely over room
temperature. As soon as I put it back in and tried to start the machine, the
little slab of a heat sink got very hot. After that the 604e chip won't work
either. I guess the motherboard fried too. I guess I will get the 7600 going
with the replacement G3 and get an 18 gig seagate drive to finish off my
"new" mac.

Any thoughts?
