The current (August 2002) issue of MacAddict has an article on how to "Install Mac OS X on Unsupported Macs," which may be of interest to PowerWave and PowerTower Pro owners.
The magazine rates the difficulty factor as "Easy," though you wil need at least 1.5 GB of free hard drive space just for OS X's basic installation (2 GB preferred); will want at least 256 MB of RAM; should back up everything you prize; and must upgrade to OS 9.1. One key is downloading the free XPostFacto software from Other World Computing: http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/ Other World is also advertising to its email subscribers: -- "Apple Mac OS X (10.0.3) CD & Apple OS License, fully upgradeable to OS 10.1 or later" for $40. (You might need to have OS 9.1 independent of this.) or: -- "Apple Mac OS X 10.0.3 with 10.1 Update Kit Bundle. Includes 10.1 Manual, 10.1 CD(10.1.5 Update free download)" for $50. (You will need OS 9.1 separately.) (Note: I'm not associated with OWC; just a customer.) Here's what they have to say about OS X on older machines: "While Apple has limited its support for Mac OS X to those machines that originally came with a G3 or G4 processor, it is possible to install Mac OS X on some earlier machines. The unsupported machines that work now are the 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9600, as well the clones that were based on one of these systems (the Umax S900 and J700, and the Power Computing PowerWave and PowerTower Pro). The original processors in these machines will work (with the exception of the 7500, which requires a processor upgrade). G3 or G4 upgrade cards work as well. Other models that use the PCI architecture may be made to work in time. Version 2.2b1 of XPostFacto adds beta-level support for the original Powerbook G3, the 3400, and the 2400." Here's hoping that a way can be found for other models, such as PowerCenter and PowerTower (non-Pro), to use OS X for those of us who enjoy trying to wreck perfectly good computers or who feel it's time to get a little OS X experience under our belts. --Chuck -- Power Computing is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... 123Inkjets.com <http://lowendmac.com/ad/123inkjets.html> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Power Computing list info: <http://lowendmac.com/power/list.html> Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> List archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/powercomputing%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Macintosh?
