Allegory: The same advice I gave my sons, "When trouble shooting try the
cheapest options first. Some pessimistic people always envision a worst
case scenario. No need replacing the engine before trying new Spark Plugs."

So saying, if the suggestion below doesn't solve your problem, first get
a new battery. then try it again. 

I once hooked up a new monitor to a four year old Apple II vx with
Sonnet 040 card. All booted up fine and five minutes later the Power
Supply failed. The coincidence of the 15" color Monitor replacing the
19" B&W and the Power Supply failure caused me to stagger down several
blind alleys.
