Collette,

It is possible that one of your ram sticks went bad.  Have you tested your
ram?  The newest Techtool Pro will do this.  Guage Pro 1.1 will do this for
you and can be downloaded free.  Make sure to let it run continuously with
all other processes shut down.  Ram does go bad so this is at least worth
checking.  

I assume you've pulled and reseated the sticks just in case the contact went
bad or came loose.  I don't think simply having 256 mb should be causing
such problems.  While more ram is always good, I think it is something else
causing the problems.
