Folks,

I remember a while ago there was some interesting discussion about hard drive
formatting utilities, although I can't seem to put my hand on the messages that
contained this info.

My original configuration was a PCP 210 with a 2 GB internal IBM hard drive. I added
a new Seagate 18 GB Barracuda about 3 years ago. The software that shipped with my
computer was OS 8. As a matter of course, I always used the 3rd-party utility that
came bundled with OS 8 on CD-R which was FWB's Hard Drive Toolkit. Worked great on
both drives.

Now, as I attempt to sort through some mysterious problems (which I've written about
in past posts), I'd like to know what you recommend for hard drive utilities, and what
about backwards compatibility? For example, would getting the latest and greatest
version of FWB *always* be in my best interest even though I'm still using earlier
versions of Mac OS, apps, etc.? (don't ask why, I just like them ;) How is this used
in conjunction with Apple's Disk Format utility (which also shipped with my original
PCC package)? Up 'til now, I've used FWB for formatting/setting up drives, and Norton
for repair, defragging, etc.

I'm particularly interested in knowing specific steps that some of you use for
complete reformatting/setting up drives. Feedback based on experience is appreciated.

John
