I wasn't aware that Apple OS 7.6's hard disk drive driver -- whatever it's
called, although I'd bet it wasn't called Drive Driver ;-) -- would
recognize non-Apple HDs.

Certainly the Apple CD-ROM driver 5.3.1 is well known for doing the same
with non-Apple CD-ROM drives.
