Just to chime in on this note, I have tried using XpostFacto on a 
PowerMac 7300 and when I try to install 10.1, I get a few screens of 
Unix error messages, and ultimately it times out waiting for root. I'm 
pretty sure that's a result of the SCSI boot drive not being set to 
device 0 (I picked this unit up from eBay) and it could also be the CD.

With the symptoms you describe, my first instinct is to say that it is 
the display card. Otherwise, you should be seeing a few screenfuls of 
error messages. However, as suggested by another user a non-Apple 
branded SCSI CD drive (Apple SCSI CD drives are typically Mitsumi and 
Matshushita) may cause a hitch in the install process from the very start.
