Did that but nothing new happened. I am beginning to suspect a hardware problem with the serial ports since the same modems (Supra 28.8 Faxmodem, SupraExpress 33.6 and 56k) on a 7500 (7.6.1) and 8500 (8.6) work flawlessly. The 240 may have been stored in a warehouse for sometime (after its ATX power supply malfunctioned) before I bought it. Both printer and modem ports work well with a LW-IINTX on Appletalk/Localtalk (PhoneNet connectors) network, but seem unable to detect the handshake signal from POP and SMTP servers located miles away compared to the printer hooked up about 15 feet distance (do laserprinters emit a handshake signal?) >Tell us a bit more about your setup.
