I had a freeze up problem such as this and it turned out to be the Apple Guide Extension, i.e., This Extension is using too much memory guaranteeing the System heap. ??? What ever the heck that means.
IMNSHO, Conflict Catcher should be ESSENTIAL ... with all the things you've installed and the different operations you are planning to use it for. It will amaze you to find out some of the little Chicken S... items that can cause you problems. When one of my Grand Chillins or daughters (in-law, out-law and progeny) get ahold of a few MacAddict disks and start installing: Game Demos, Star Charts, astrological prognosticators, etc. ... It's just a matter of time before I have to come over with Conflict Catcher, TechTool and Spring Cleaning to purge the system Folder.
