Personally, I find the Control Strip to be a pain in the ... to circumvent this, I've assigned software to my "F" keys.
This said, I have created a Word processor Template with 1/2" borders, Opening the Keyboard Control Panel and selecting "Options" enables you to assign programs or software to the "F" (function) Keys. The template of the WP w/ 1/2" border is assigned to the #5 F-Key. My modified simple spread sheet template is #6, Personal L/H #7, Business L/H #8, etc. Documents created in this manner retain their Page set up. With Macintosh OS 9.1 or 9.2, assigning functions to the F-Keys and creating Macros ... You can just fly though tasks, opening 4 or 5 programs at once, coping text or graphics between them ... A simple little example, pushing 3 buttons puts me on the web, i.e., Pushing the #1 F-Key opens my Remote Access Control Panel. Pushing the return key connects me with my ISP. Pushing the #2 F-Key opens NetScape. I have Netscape preferences set: "To open the message window first." One click on "Get Messages" and there you are. My OS X rig is not nearly as friendly or as productive.
